Artist Statement
Dema L.
Whitmeyer
My visual art career is a composite of commercial art
and fine art. In my lifetime I have
been an artisan in Arkansas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and New York City.
With
a BA degree from Louisiana Tech
University
I
started as an art director for a television station before shifting into
newspaper advertising where I spent the majority of my career until moving to New York City
in
October of 1985. My commercial art
skills of composition, layout, design, color sense, attention to
detail all overlap into producing fine art.
I made time
to explore many different art avenues from stone lithography in Mexico to botanical illustration
in NYC.
At
the moment I am rediscovering Shreveport through 35mm
photography reproduced as Giclee prints on canvas. Being
a realist and naturalist my Romantic spirits art
ideal is the classical approach to drawing and painting. I
am using acrylic paints for the first time just for the fun
of doing it, however, I prefer oil paints in the future.
“The
Best is yet to Come” now that I am semi-retired I
can devote more time to fine art and photography.
“Love
of Beauty” continues to feed my Soul’s
Holy Trinity of mind, body and spirit.

About
the artist DEMA L.WHITMEYER
My creative spirit captures “The Beauty
of Life” in the camera flash of a precious moment. Born and
raised in Shreveport, I graduated
from C.E. Byrd and earned a BA degree of Liberal Arts in Art from Louisiana
Tech University. Further artistic studies encompass The
Instituto de Allende in San Miguel, Mexico; Tulane University; The New Orleans
Academy of Fine Art; The New York Academy of Fine Art; The Art Student’s
League; The New York Botanical Garden’s Botanical Illustration certificate program and The Salmagundi Club.
Love of 35mm photography began with my first job in Arkansas
working at KTVE-TV as art director. After several years I yearned for a larger
life experience and moved to artful New
Orleans.
Another career shift was made into newspaper advertising for many years working
mostly in New Orleans for
D.H. Holmes, Ltd. During this time I
showed and raised Afghan Hound dogs and began to draw again. My passion for fine detail graphite
drawing started an art path leading me to New
York City in the fall of 1985. While working I studied Botanical Illustration and I
dipped into several other exhilarating art academies in New
York City.
Living my life as an artistic adventure has taken me
traveling across the U.S.A.,
Mexico and I
enjoyed a divine summer in Europe. Gazing in awe
at Leonardo’s “Mona Lisa” at the Louvre and sipping wine
with Erte at his studio in Paris. Then on to Rembrandt’s House full of drawings
and dear Van Gogh’s colorful painting fits of genius in Amsterdam
after viewing the great “Berlin Wall” before the fall. Repeatedly going to galleries and
museums in Europe and New York City for educational
inspiration and enough fond memories to last a lifetime.
Being a classic realist and naturalist the range of my
fine art activities embrace photography, stone lithography, sculpture,
etching, linoleum block cuts, charcoal and exceptionally fine graphite drawings,
pen and ink, dabbles in watercolor, oil and now acrylic painting. Since returning to Shreveport
my interests call me to explore more painting and local
photography as I enjoy transforming my imaginative eye into limited
edition Giclee Prints on canvas now. “Love of
Beauty” is my present fine art mantra.

GICLEE PRINTING
ON
CANVAS
The
latest avant-gardeart
form of digital printing.
The word
“giclee”is
a French word meaning, “to squirt” which
is exactly what an inkjet printer does.
The
reproduction process starts with the digital acquisition of the image. The digital image is
sized,
cropped and color matched for the print. The
artist and printer form a creative partnership, the
goal being the best possible realization of the
artist’s vision. Once the final proof
has an OK signed
by the artist, the actual printing can begin. Canvas,
paper or fabric can be loaded onto the printer. Brilliant
color and rich texture have made Giclee prints
the reproduction choice of many artists, photographers,
museums, galleries and collectors.
My
limited edition Giclee Canvas Prints are executed
by a HP DesignJet5000sp six color printer using
UV fade resistant inks that can last up to 150 years depending
on the care given by the art collector. Each
print is individually sprayed with varnish. Right
now I truly enjoy seeing my 35mm photography reproduced
on canvas using the latest digital technology.
